While out walking I came across a large blackberry bush, excitement was building as I could almost taste the sharp and sweet blackberry and apple crumble with custard. One of my favourite things about transitioning from summer to autumn.
On closer inspection I saw that on one bramble there was a big juicy black blackberry, some slightly harder pinkish ones and some tight white/green little buds still. They are in the same environment, with the same access to the food that nourishes them, sunlight, water, soil, however they were still growing at different rates. And not one of them looked worried about it in the slightest, they were all busy growing in their own time.
What if we could all be more blackberry? Letting nature do its thing, accept that we all grow at different rates, no matter our size, shape and colour there is space for us in the same environment.
I should be more……..wealthy, healthy, happy, energetic, fit, funny, loud, quiet insert your own words here…… we all have them.
Comparison starts the minute we are conceived, how well is the fertilised cell growing compared to “normal” growth rates, how big or small is the baby, is it in the right position, then when we enter the world it continues, are we in the right percentile for our age, we get parents, teachers and peers telling us how we should be compared to expectations. No wonder we grow up with the art of comparison being something that is ingrained in us. It’s all around us.
Now I am not against all benchmarks, after all if the docs had not found my abnormal cells in my boob I wouldn’t be here today, and I imagine you could find a story in your own life that would fit in to the positive of the bench-marking system. So there is absolutely a need for us to know when things are a little off kilter or out of the norm, but it is not conducive to every area in our lives so making it a conscious choice is a skill that we can develop.
Like the blackberries we are all individual and we all have a part to play in this world, that is why you are here, yes you, you were specifically made to play a vital role in this world and it is not about being like anyone else it is about being YOU.
You are your superpower. So the next time you think about saying you should be more like the person who seems to have it all on the outside, remember to sit, breathe and connect to the superpower of being you.
